Yuan Yao (Yannick)

Puzzles

I enjoy solving puzzles, mostly logic puzzles and puzzle hunts. I have also written puzzles for many events (some with coauthors).

Galactic Puzzle Hunt

I have been hunting with ✈️✈️✈️Galactic Trendsetters✈️✈️✈️ since 2018, and have been involved in the online puzzle hunt that the team organizes every year since then. The list of past hunts can be found here.

MIT Mystery Hunt

This is an annual in-person puzzle hunt held at MIT every year, generally considered the most important puzzle hunt in the community. ✈️✈️✈️Galactic Trendsetters✈️✈️✈️ won MIT Mystery Hunt in 2020 and hence I helped write the one in 2021.

Cipher & Code Breaking Competition (CCBC)

This is an annual online puzzle hunt in China, following a similar format as MIT Mystery Hunt where the winning team each year writes the next hunt. I was on the team who won CCBC 11 and hence helped write CCBC 12 in 2022.

This hunt is themed around time loops and time travel, so each puzzle is labeled by a year and each round is called a “timeline”. Needless to say, some puzzles require knowing Chinese to solve, although there are also many that are more language-neutral.

PEA Puzzle Hunt

This is a puzzle hunt that I helped start in high school after participating in the MIT Mystery Hunt for the first time in 2016. I wrote puzzles for 2016-2017 as a student and 2018/2020 as an alum. The hunt archive is here, although old hunts are not very well-preserved and not very well-documented.

(TODO add list)

World Puzzle Championship (WPC)

The World Puzzle Championship is the premier international event on competitive logic puzzle solving. I participated in WPC in 2023 (in Canada) and 2025 (in Hungary). The WPC in 2024 was held in China and I was on the writing team.

The puzzles from that event are not public but can be purchased here. The instruction booklet, containing the list of all puzzles as well as their instructions and examples, is available for free.

It would not be useful to list every puzzle I contributed, but I wrote more than half of the puzzles on rounds 04, 05, 07, 08, 11, 12, 13, and C.

24-Hour Puzzle Championship (24HPC)

This is an annual-ish logic puzzle competition held in Hungary, where solvers have to solve puzzles nearly continuously for 24 hours. The puzzle sets are sourced from many groups of authors.

(Many thanks to Ivan Koswara (chaotic_iak) for maintaining the archive.)
